McBride is a small village in the BC Rockies whose economy is highly dependent on tourism and winter snowmobile tourism is the largest economic driver. On the 22 January 2024 the MBCSA was notified by BC Recreation, Sites and Trails of structural issues with the first and largest bridge (120 ft span) on the Renshaw trail due to erosion of the abutments and the center pier. Due to safety concerns the bridge was removed cutting off access to the Renshaw snowmobile recreation area, BC’s largest managed riding area, and McBride’s most popular riding area. Upon closure of the trail, McBride immediately seen a 70% drop in riders to the area which has had a severe impact on businesses in the community.
The MBCSA has exhausted all its available options to this point trying to come up with a solution. Frustrated by the lack of action by government to step up and help rectify the problem, and the impact this is having on the community, the MBCSA feels this is a last resort to get the riding area back open for all users. The MBCSA is hoping to raise enough funds that combined with grants, they can purchase a bridge, have it installed and complete repairs to other bridges and the trail to the Renshaw snowmobile area.
